My Story

Sofia is a freelance theatre artist based out of London, from San Diego, California. She is currently the Artistic Director of East London Theatre Collective, and recently graduated from University of East London with a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing (first-class honours), where she served at the Course Representative. 


Sofia's most recent credits include Amal y Suenos with  Imagine Brave Spaces, Deja Vu Kabaret by Alara Koroglu and Frederick Zennor with East London Theatre Collective and Off the Beat Productions (Director); Strike! by Tracy Ryan with Ardent Theatre at the Southwark Playhouse (Assistant Director), The Phase by
Zoe Morris and Meg McGrady with Chromatic Creative at The Vaults Festival, and Bloody Influences by Ena Begovic and Ben Mansbridge at the Barons Court Theatre and Brighton Fringe Festival (Director)- where it won "Best Show of 2023" by the Brighton Fringe Reviewers Hub. 

She received a Theatre Arts B.A. with Honors in Directing  from the University of California, San Diego. Sofia tirelessly works to create as much theatre as possible wherever she is, and with whatever resources she has. For her work upholding the principals of community, Sofia received the 2018 BEARL Award for 'Championing Freedom of Expression' and the 2018 Dr. Floyd Gaffney Award for 'excellence to professional performance and/or community service using the performing arts'. 

Sofia works as a Teaching Artist in the La Jolla Playhouse's Education and Outreach department and as a Teaching Faciliator with arts charity CREATE. Prior to her time in London, she helped in the foundation of radical theatre company Blindspot Collective. She also has worked as a stage manager, director, and actor with several other theatre's in the San Diego and London area. Sofia  has recently served as the the Artistic Director of Company 157, Managing Director of Nomads Theatre Company, and as an Artist in Residence at California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Sofia creates metamodern work at the intersection of both scripted New Work Development, and Devised Ensemble-Based Theatre Processes. Sofia aims to create new performance art that is relevant in the current social and political landscape, by sharing important messages based in social justice issues. Her background of training in Theatre of The Oppressed has empowered her to tell contemporary stories which reflect the diversity in the communities around her. This work has lead to projects based within Performance Protest and Radical Dramaturgy in order to bring awareness to real struggles her community faces. Some of the themes in her recent work have tackled anti-racism, intersectional feminism, and environmental justice.
