Artist Statement

Sofia Zaragoza is a multidisciplinary theatre director and facilitator with a passion for blending forms of theatre for social justice, musical theatre, new work development, and site-specific and immersive theatre. Trained in American Musical Theatre since the age of 6 years old, Sofia now has made the transition from performer into leadership roles within the theatre industry.

Trained in Theatre of the Oppressed since 2013, Sofia's work is aimed at creating theatrical spaces which are radical, nonhierarchical, and anticolonialist. As a queer woman of colour, she has been focused on dismantling heteropatriarchal structures within theatre; London's global lived experiences has been a key inspiration in widening this artistic practice. Outside of developing this counter-cultural theatrical practice, her research is also now exploring the question, "Can theatre and performance influence the culture of an active social justice movement?". Sofia has a focus on creating performances with collaborative ensembles to create plays that are authentic, radical, and engaging. It is based within a belief that "it is about the process, not the performance."
